Orford was a bustling and important location, particularly from the 12th to the 17th Century. In the 1500s, there were no less than 11 Ale houses, with one of the more important being the Jolly Sailor. The Jolly Sailor once stood on a causeway leading to the quay with a tidal harbour immediately opposite, where the large Orford Car Park is now.
