I think it all comes down to how tightly you crochet and how well you are able to assemble the parts. Yes, they killed my hands, but I'm beyond happy about how it turned out.

Finished Bluey jumper for my daughter. Great work, I love the design! It looks like you're accidentally twisting every other row of your stitches in the part that's knit flat. This makes me think it's the purl stitches. Here and here are two really great posts that people have made on this sub previously explaining how twisted stitches.
